Cara Nilsen
Diocesan Discerner

I am a sojourner at St. Francis, having been privileged to be assigned here to complete my Diocesan Discernment Year (DDY), which began September 14 and ends on May 24, 2026.

The purpose of my time here is to deepen my experience of ministry at a parish community that is different from my home parish, which is St. Luke’s of Long Beach, as I discern whether ordained ministry is where God is leading me.

During my time here, I am striving both to observe and to contribute to the many aspects of active ministry and beloved community that abound here at St. Francis. I am present at the church on a weekly basis: on Tuesday mornings from 9-11 am in the office, on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm for the Women’s Lectionary Study Group, and on Sunday mornings for the 8 am and 10 am Worship services.

While here, I am gaining experience in occasional preaching, and in being part of creating new aspects of worship together, such as the Liturgy Lab (“Celebrating the Divine Feminine”), debuting on February 1st.

I continue to be on the lookout for other areas of parish and ministry life that I can observe and participate in. I recently attended the January Finance and Vestry meetings. A couple of months ago, I was able to come in on a Saturday and assist Rev. Jason with a small wedding in the Chapel. I have been observing and helping with the Altar Guild on Sunday mornings.

I can feel overwhelmed at times as I can worry about whether I am absorbing as much as I should during my time here – or if my gifts are able to contribute what is needed in such important work. However, this is its own opportunity for growth as I rely on and trust in the Spirit.

Rev. Jason is providing a priceless example and mentoring me in an amazing and generous way. I am also being supported by a Congregational Discernment Committee made up of five stellar church members, who I meet with monthly.

I am so encouraged in my journey by the amazing spirit of welcome and support I continue to receive from the rest of the staff, as well as the beautiful community here at St. Francis. Thank you!
